When Zachary Wahlder produced his documentary ‘See You At The Party: A Mardi Gras Story,’ his aim was simply to document the journey of their newly founded Krewe de Glitz. In hindsight, the film is much more than just a documentary of a Mardi Gras krewe, it is a time capsule of a celebration that might not be the same for years to come.
“Looking back, there is so much we really didn’t know at the time. We were pretty oblivious to the pandemic ahead, there are a few times when somebody mentions ‘that virus going around,’ but by and large, we were celebrating Mardi Gras the way we always have,” says Wahlder. The Russian-born filmmaker was adopted at a young age and grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana, before moving to New Orleans at age 13. “I’ve always loved storytelling, both my own and the stories of others, and film has been the perfect medium for me. When we started working on See You At The Party, it was just about our krewe and what was going on. A snapshot in time so to speak.”
Zachary’s father, prominent Alexandria attorney Thomas B. Wahlder bankrolled the film and offered business advice along the way. “Our whole family has deep ties to New Orleans and Mardi Gras,” says the elder Wahlder. “When Zach brought me the idea of making a documentary, it sounded like a fun project and a way for him to put his education to good use, so we went ahead. Looking at it now it feels a little bit like he accidentally created a time capsule.”
‘See You At The Party: A Mardi Gras Story’ has already started to garner a few accolades, being accepted both into the Berlin Lift Off Film Festival and the Oniros Film Awards New York. It is currently available on YouTube and Vimeo and is also being considered for publication on Amazon Prime Video.
